My name is Luca Astolfi . I was born in Como (Italy) in 1988. I practised capoira for 8 years and after that I've start to play samba batucada in a percussion band. When I first started playing drums he realized that was my road, I knew that I was in love with pandeiro ... that's why I started to build them.
the whole process for making the pandeiro is manual. When I build my pandeiro I focus on these factors:
There is no other tool like the pandeiro, there is always something to improve, otherwise we'd still be in caves!!!. My personal campaign of research and development led to the creation of three types of changes:
Unfortunately the technique of horizontal handle very tiring on the wrist, especially if it's a war pandeiro. the only alternative is to choose the right materials to obtain a pandeiro light and playable
In my lab I make all other percussion instruments typical of Brazilian music: shekere, tamborim, surdos, "chocalho, repinique
The frame drums are a very rich and varied percussion family, have been developed and evolved in different cultures, just to name a few: Kanjira, Adufe , Daf ,Rebana and Bodhrán, obviously can not miss the Pandeiro, and Italians Tamorra and Tamburello.
The Berimbau (bee-rim-bau) is a percussion instrument with an African origin. It is the main instrument that is used in the Capoeira music and it is the one that defines the capoeira game – angola or regional. It is relatively complex and consists of a flexible wooden rod called “pau” or “verga”, a steel string called “arame” and gourd called “Cabaça”. The Berimbau is played with the help of a small thin stick called varreta, a coin called dobrao and a caxixi.
In collaboration with Ciro Griamundo Maratone, all Capoeira instruments can be purchased from his site
Can I stock up and give you advice on the choice of modifications and spare parts you might need:
My pandeiro are the result of years of work and research in materials and best combinations to achieve agility and lightness.
the final price for pandeiro depends by what optional you want, It's between 80€ for a basic model and 160€ for a full optional
Yes you can make it lighter, firstrly i suggest to change the top hoop, because usually the hoop it's in brass or iron that weigh 2.5 times more than aluminum. So if an Iron top hoop weigh 80gr the alluminium hoop weigh 30gr. You can change also the block for the tuning hooks with an alluminium parts.
